Protest Event Analysis and Its Offspring.

Protest Event Analysis and Its Offspring.

in: Donatella della Porta, 2014, Methodological Practices in Social Movement Research. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 335-367

Protest event analysis and related types of quantitative content analysis, such as political claims analysis, have become key methods of social movement research during the last decades. This chapter discusses the main questions and challenges faced by researchers who want to conduct such an analysis. More precisely, the chapter starts by summarizing four generations of research. This highlights the wide range of questions that can be addressed by protest event analysis and its offspring. The main part of the chapter is devoted to the “how to” questions: moving from data collection to data analysis. Amongst other issues, the chapter deals with questions related to conceptualization, source selection, sampling, and selection bias.
